Biofeedback for Urinary Incontinence

Biofeedback is the process of using biomedical instrumentation to measure a physiological system, in order to provide real time, understandable and usable information. This information is then used in the design of a treatment protocol specific to each person’s needs.

We use biofeedback to help strengthen and retrain the muscles of the pelvic floor, which are vital to continence. The skills and exercises taught through biofeedback are non-invasive, painless, and allow clients to take back control so they can live their lives.

Training Your Pelvic Floor Muscles

LQR UI Image 1114The muscles of the pelvic floor help support the bladder and the urethra, as well as work to help keep the urethra closed. When these muscles become weak – due to age and loss of estrogen, vaginal delivery of a baby, surgical procedure, or athletic training (such as being a runner) – urine is able to leak.
Pelvic floor muscle training works to strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, increasing their bulk so that they are stronger and tighter, thus preventing the unwanted leakage of urine.
Biofeedback, Electrical Stimulation & the treatment of incontinence.

Biofeedback is a highly effective, safe, and non-invasive method used to help you in the training of your pelvic floor muscles. It is a means of monitoring the electrical activity of your pelvic floor on a computer screen to help you learn to retrain your muscles and to use them correctly. Since these are not muscles we can see, biofeedback allows you a way of virtually ‘seeing’ your pelvic floor so that you can learn to contract your muscles at the appropriate times and prevent urinary incontinence.

Electrical Stimulation, or E-stim, uses a mild, barely perceptible current to stimulate the targeted muscles of the pelvic floor. This causes a slight contraction in those muscles, and helps to bulk and strengthen them. E-stim is used along with biofeedback as a supplement to your exercises and pelvic muscle training.

What Type of Incontinence Can Biofeedback Help?

Overactive Bladder
Pelvic floor muscle training is the FIRST LINE TREATMENT recommended by the American Urological Association for overactive bladder.

Urinary incontinence is common following radical prostatectomy. Strengthening the pelvic floor through targeted muscle training decreases urinary incontinence resulting from your prostate surgery.

  • Pre-surgery- pelvic floor muscle training will help prepare you for a quicker recovery following your procedure.
  • Post-surgery – pelvic floor muscle training will help you regain lost control and decrease or eliminate urinary incontinence all together.

Stress Incontinence
Stress incontinence is common particularly among woman after the birth of a baby, and post-menopause. Stress incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine with a sneeze, cough, while laughing, or lifting something heavy. Strengthening the muscles of the pelvic floor is a highly effective means of eliminating stress urinary incontinence.

Urge Incontinence
Because we can’t directly control the muscle responsible for causing urge incontinence, working with the muscles of the pelvic floor allows you to indirectly counteract the overactive muscle and better control your urges. We used a combination of biofeedback for pelvic floor muscle training, urge suppression techniques, behavioral bladder training, fluid management, and dietary considerations to help you control your urge incontinence.

Mixed Incontinence
Many people have a mixed of more than one type of urinary incontinence.

Postpartum Stress Incontinence
Stress incontinence is a common problem for postpartum women. Many women live with incontinence following the birth of a child because they believe there is nothing they can do about it– but there is. Weather you gave birth 3 months or 30 years ago, biofeedback can help you strengthen your pelvic floor and stop those little leaks you’ve learned to life with.


Helping Seniors Maintain Independence and Quality of Life
Incontinence is a common problem for aging adults. It is also a one of the leading causes of progressive social isolation.  Statistically, aging adults who become more socially isolated experience declining health at a faster rate than those who remain socially engaged. This leads to a higher rate of dependence on others for activities of daily living, and an overall decreased quality of life.  Retaining or regaining continence allows seniors the confidence and freedom to stay active, socially engaged, and independent.

Biofeedback is the first line treatment for urinary incontinence according to the published urology guidelines.

  • The USPSTF gives biofeedback for incontinence an evidence strength grade B – making it a highly recommended service.
  • The Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback rates the efficacy of biofeedback for urinary incontinence as a level 5, the highest level of efficacy.

Our Service

We offer a program of 8 weekly biofeedback training sessions to both maintain and regain continence. During your sessions, you will learn the valuable skills and gain the pelvic strength needed to maintain continence with the use of biofeedback, e-stimulation, and behavioral training techniques. We then conduct follow-up appointments at 4 and 8 weeks to ensure complete care and satisfaction.

We are unable to file insurance in the office. We do, however, offer completed forms for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

LQR Lydia 021915Lydia Johnson, a registered nurse, joined LQR in 2014 as the Director of Medical Biofeedback. Ms. Johnson received her BSN from Duke University, and holds a Master of Arts from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Ms. Johnson is a Nexalin Certified Technician (NCT), and completed her course work in biofeedback for pelvic floor disorder at Saybrook University.
